Be a beauty queen

Be a beauty queen

Don’t have mile-long legs, beautiful flowing hair, bedroom eyes, a perfect set of pearly whites and a traffic-stopping figure? That doesn’t really matter; you can still be a beauty queen in your own right.

Anyone, including the frumpiest person, can shine if they make an effort to improve their looks. If you want a great body, healthier hair and blemish-free skin, you should expect to work hard and be disciplined in striving towards your goals. It will be well worth it in the end, when you look your best and exude more self-confidence.

Not everyone is born a beauty queen, but everyone has some good features that can be enhanced. It is evident from the many examples of makeovers shown in the media that we can easily improve our looks by making some changes in our dressing, hairstyle and use of make-up.

The challenges however, are being bold enough to take that first step towards changing our image, and being consistent in adopting and maintaining those necessary beauty-enhancing lifestyle habits. But strive we must, for being a true beauty queen means making the most of oneself in every way!

Tips for becoming a beauty queen

  • You don’t have to be stick-thin to look good. But if you do need to lose some weight, it is far better to follow a sensible diet and regular exercise programme than to go for extreme measures like liposuction or crash dieting. A balanced, nutritious diet is vital because it’ll literally make you glow – your skin, hair and nails will have a healthy sheen; and of course, you’ll look and feel great!

  • Let’s face it – it’s no use being beautiful if you’re boring and not very bright. If you’ve watched beauty contests, you would surely have had a good chuckle over some of the half-witted lines spouted by the beautiful contestants during those nerve-wracking answer-and-question segments. Beauty and brains are always a winning combination, so do make an effort to enhance your grey cells too, by reading widely, continually learning new things and always taking an interest in the world around you.

  • One of the most beautiful features anyone can sport is a smile. If you strive to be a happier, kinder and more positive, generous and contented person, and succeed in mastering the art of inner peace, you’ll automatically develop a special aura that’ll definitely make you appear beautiful in everyone’s eyes!

Health and Beauty

November 29th 2007 01:26
In the US, girls as young as 6 can waltz into a beauty salon, ask for a facial, manicure and hair extensions without the beauty therapist batting an eyelid or quickly shepherding them out of the salon to look for their parents. Because the thing is, it’s actually the mothers ushering their daughters into these pampering sessions, which some of us didn’t get until we were adults, under the guise of quality time.

Israeli health and beauty spa offers a snake massage for £40

Israeli health and beauty spa offers a snake massage for £40

Ada Barak believes that physical contact with the reptiles can be a relaxing experience Photo: GETTY IMAGES

The treatment consists of six non-venomous snakes massaging the client's aching muscles and joints.

Ada Barak's snake spa, in Talmei Elazar, northern Israel, uses California and Florida king snakes, corn snakes and milk snakes for the massages, which cost £40 ($70).

Miss Barak believes that physical contact with the reptiles can be a relaxing experience. She says that she was inspired by her belief that once people get over any initial misgivings, they find physical contact with the snakes to be stress relieving.

"Some people said that holding the snakes made them feel better, relaxed," she said "One old lady said it was soothing, like a cold compress."

The size of the snakes depends on the type of massage - the larger ones are said to alleviate deeper muscle tensions and the smaller ones create a 'fluttering' effect. All are the snakes used are non-venemous.

Miss Barak began offering the service at the Talmey El'Azar tourist attraction in 2006 and now most of her income comes from exhibiting plants at her carnivorous plant farm, which eat everything from insects to small mammals.

She appeared on Tyra Banks Show, an American chat show, in April for an episode entitled "Beauty Tips Around the World".

Blush Up A special by our Content Manager

Blush Up
A special by our Content Manager

blusher application: For cheek colour, blusher is placed directly on the cheekbones, and blended out from there. Never bring blush closer to the nose than the outer rim of your iris or below and imaginary line from nostril base to edge of face.

blusher for a long face: If you want to make your face appear rounder, apply blush straight across the cheekbone. Avoid placing blush high on the cheekbones or on temple.

blusher for a round face: If you want to make your face appear more oval, apply blush diagonally on the cheekbone, angled toward temple.

colour taming: To soften a too-bright blusher, top with loose face powder.
double blushing: If your blusher fades, layer colour for longer wear. Start with blusher. Dust over with blended face powder. Then apply a sheer powder blusher.
veil of light: A stroke of shimmery powder or light makeup base that runs atop cheekbones and curves up to the temples, lighting eyes.

Summer Make-up! Net research by Sadia Hanif

Summer Make-up!
Net research by Sadia Hanif
Summer make-up should be light. Your skin should have a natural glow. Keep Foundation to a minimum, if possible just use some cover stick on the areas that really need coverage and apply a light oil-free moisturizer and work it in over your cover stick to give you a light natural glow.

Add a little mascara and a summer lipcolor like a coral or pink lipgloss. Don't forget to add a little color to your cheeks.
If you are pressed for time use the same color that you use on your lips on your cheeks.Dab a little color on your finger and brush lightly on your cheeks.

Summer Tresses

In the summer months anything goes.

If your hair is short put a little gel and some water in your hair and slick it back. Part the hair to one side to give it a sophisticated look.

If your hair is long you can add some gel and a frizz fighting product to the hair and let it dry naturally. You'll have nice ringlets that take no effort to achieve. Pull hair back in a sleek bun at the nape of your neck.Try not to over process your hair for summer. Minimal effort gives great results.

colour taming: Lessen the strength of a dark or bright lipstick or lip pencil with an overcoat of lip gloss.

dot - dot - dash: To get an even line with lip pencil, draw two dots at the upper lip's bow, a dash across bottom of lower lip, then connect all three around the lip line.

lipstick creep/bleed: Start with de-flake, smooth dry spots and prevent lip-clour from bleeding. Because the mouth area is the second driest area after eyes, little vertical mouth lines can occur and cause lipstick creep. Prevent dryness by increasing moisture around mouth at night. Use a long wear lipstick to keep colour in tact. Help prevent feathering by using an all-over base of quickliner for lips.

lipstick fade: To make lipstick really last, outline and fill entire lip surface with base coat of lip pencil to prevent colour-bleed, give lipstick longer wear and more interesting depth and texture. Drier matte texture helps lipstick hold tight.

lipstick on glasses, cups: To keep lipstick from coming off on your glass, blot away all moisture after the initial application. Re-apply, blot once more. Try a transfer-resistant formula.

minimizing full lips: If you want to make lips appear smaller, use concealer over natural lip line. Line just inside natural lip line. Fill in new lip shape with lipstick.

rough/chapped: First, exfoliate dry, rough layer with some scrub cream, gently applied. Then apply any lip treatments. Blot or rub in and apply lipstick.

thin lips: If you want to make lips appear fuller outline lips just outside natural lip line. Fill in new lip shape with pencil lipstick or a lip shaping pencil for precision and perfect colour.

uneven lips: If one lip is thinner and you want to make lips appear balanced, outline thinner lip just outside natural lip line. Line fuller lips along natural lipline. Fill in new lip shape with lipstick.

Close shave: Exfoliate with any body sloughing cream before you shave your legs to get the sleekest, closest shave. Removing dead skin allows the razor to glide, not drag.

Dry feet & hands: A special bedtime treat for dry feet and hands: Slather them with some moisturiser, then cover them with cotton socks. When you wake up, they'll be soft, smooth.

Flyaway Hair: Instant tame for flyaway hair: apply any hand repair or Moistureiser to your hands; allow it to absorb. Run hands quickly through hair, and rub hair-ends between hands. Head off bothersome flyaways by pulling hair into a ponytail or headband; spritz generously with Non-Aerosol Hairspray; smooth into hair with hands.

Self-tanning Tips: To get an even, natural-looking tan--first exfoliate away flakes and rough skin that grab colour patches. Try any body Sloughing Cream in the shower. Towel Dry. Apply self-tanning Body Mist or self-tanning Lotion directly onto skin, blend evenly. Wash hands and brush nails with soap and water immediately after application. Let dry fifteen minutes. Don't forget to apply sun block for adequate protection.

Ten minute mini-spa: Fill bathtub with comfortably warm water. Massage an exfoliating cream or scrub onto clean face in a gentle, circling motion; rinse. Smooth Moisturizer all over face for five minutes to hydrate. During bath, rub body sloughing cream on legs, arms, shoulders, knees--anywhere body needs smoothing. Protect skin and seal in moisture the instant you finish toweling off with some moisture lock body formula.

Tired Feet: Fast treat for over-worked, over-stressed feet: An invigorating foot massage with minty, grainy body sloughing cream, showered off and followed by a soothing rub-down with smooth moisturizer, which concentrates salicylic acid to smooth rough dry areas.

Even Some More Make Up Tips Reaserch by Sadia Hanif

Even Some More Make Up Tips Reaserch by Sadia Hanif

For daytime application, the most it should take you to apply your make up should be 10 - 20 minutes. Hope some of the tips below will help.

EYES

There are a couple of things to remember when applying eye make up. The skin around the eye area is one of the most sensitive. Always use products that are hypo-allergenic. When possible, try it out before buying, or if that is not convenient I recommend a product line that is guaranteed, so if for some reason you find it incompatible with your skin, you can return it for exchange of refund.Always use a base foundation. Whether it is a powder, liquid or concealer, you want to start off with an even base from which to work.

Pencils, are great for highlighting and bringing attention to the eye area. There are a couple of things to keep in mind. Less is better, you want to keep it subtle, so as not to draw too much attention to anyone area. One way you can achieve this is to make sure that you have a sharp end, minimizing the width drawn. Picking the right colour. Black is not the only colour available out there. For most women, it is the most suitable colour, although shades of brown can be just as appealing. For those that are far more fair, dark shades of blue can add a great dimension. One very important thing to remember is that eye pencils are not to be shared. That is where one can easily contract "pink eye". While it is not deadly, it can be painful and it sure is not great to look at.

Shading. There are just a couple of tips to remember. Shading is almost an art form onto itself. If you are as not practiced, I would recommend that you follow these simple tips. Darker shading creates the illusion of depth, so if you are trying to bring out smaller eyes, stay far away from dark shades. Do not put the same colour on the entire eye. Most especially if you wear blue eye shadow. You don't want to look like Mimi Bobeck. Blue eye shadow should be used in small dosages and only on the lid. When shading you want to put the darkest colour on the lid and lighter shades as you approach the brow. Ê Mascara. We have all seen the commercials about how we want to stay away from those that clump.

ACNE - Not Just for Kids A special by our Content ManagerACNE - Not Just for Kids A special by our Content Manager

ACNE - Not Just for Kids
A special by our Content Manager

Most people associate acne with hormonally charged teenagers. The cliche of the pimply adolescent is part of our culture, one looked on almost nostalgically (oh, back in the Clearasil days...).

However, for the 20% of us who have moved only from bemoaning a zit on prom night to bemoaning a zit before a job interview, acne is more like a mountain than a cute little molehill. The worst part is, no matter how many zillions of dollars we're willing to spend on our quest for perfect skin, there is no sure-fire treatment.

There are countless medications, cleansing regimes and 'cures' available, many of which contradict one another, and it is really only by trial and error that you can find one that works for you. At the most basic level, though, there are two key factors that cannot be over-emphasized: SLEEP and WATER.

Nobody knows exactly what 'beauty sleep' accomplishes, but it has recently been discovered that hormone levels fluctuate when our sleep patterns are disturbed. Since many breakouts are hormonally based, this could result in acne flare-ups. Also, the flow of oxygen to the skin increases while we sleep, regenerating skin cells.

Drinking the proverbial eight glasses of water a day helps the body flush out toxins, and, since the skin is the body's primary elimination organ, ensures that the skin has less toxins to get rid of. Simple and logical, right? So start guzzling!

Aside from these two universal skin helpers, it's always a good idea to choose a product marked 'non-comedogenic,' if you have the option. If you think you don't need moisturizer, due to an excess of oil production, you probably don't. Sebum is the skin's natural lubricant; since pimples are caused by sebum getting clogged in the pores, adding oil may not be the quickest means to clear skin.

Here's a quick rundown on some popular long-term acne treatments. Remember, what works for your sister or your best friend may not necessarily work for you. Be patient and don't expect to see results overnight.

  • RETIN-A, a Vitamin A-derived topical cream, is one of the most commonly prescribed acne treatments. It often takes up to three months to show visible results and causes increased sun sensitivity. Retin-A comes in several different strengths; generally, the user starts at the lowest percentage and works up from there.
  • KLARON (10% sodium sulfacetamide) is a new acne medication that contains the exfoliating ingredient sulfur. It is ideally suited to people with dry and sensitive skin.
  • ACCUTANE, also a Vitamin A derivative, decreases sebum production and is only recommended for severe acne. The drug is taken orally and is known to have extreme side affects, from dry skin to muscular aches to potential birth defects.
  • TETRACYCLINE, the most commonly prescribed antibiotic in acne treatment, works against the 'P. acnes' bacterium. However, antibiotics become less effective as the body develops resistance to them. Tetracycline also causes extreme sun sensitivity. Some people using antibiotics may experience stomach distress.
  • ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS are exfoliating fruit acids which are applied topically by an esthetician or dermatologist, at concentrations of 5% to more than 25%. AHAs keep the pores clear, reducing the occurrence of acne in the long term.
  • BETA HYDROXY ACIDS (most commonly, salicylic acid) penetrate through sebum and unclog pores. BHAs can be gentler than AHAs. Both should be applied on a weekly basis.
  • TRI-CYCLEN ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE is a birth control pill that has recently been approved for the treatment of acne in patients over 15 years of age. It works by decreasing the production of certain hormones which cause pimples

How to lose weight
A special by our Content Manager

Proper diet and exercise can aid in weight loss, as well as keep you healthy. We know you've heard that before - the challenge is to follow through. Others have lost weight by following these simple guidelines and so can you.
  • Set small, realistic goals. If you have a lot of weight to lose, try for 5 pounds, relax a bit and then go for 5 more.
  • Start a regular exercise program and stick with it. Don't be afraid of those sweatsuits and Lycra pants!
  • Exercise outside your routine as well - park at the far end of the parking lot and walk; take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Eat low fat, high fiber food like salads and vegetable pastas.
  • Choose foods that you like. Learn to prepare healthy, low calorie foods that taste good. Eating well doesn't have to mean eating dull!
  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals - your body starts to increase its metabolism so that calories are burned faster. Also, "mini meals" can prevent overeating.
  • Plan ahead. Keep the fridge stocked with healthy food. You'll be less likely to run out for high calorie, high fat junk food.
  • Keep a food diary -this will help pinpoint where you can improve your diet.
  • Once you discover your favorite snack time, be sure to have plenty of healthy options available.

Lose weight with a friend, or join a support group. Avoid those vending machines by carrying around your own healthy foods and leaving pocket change at home. Choose an exercise program that you enjoy, and don't shun the unconventional - did you know that regular, vigorous dancing is exercise too?

Lose weight gradually - you are more apt to keep it off. 1 to 1 1/2 pounds per week is considered safe.

Consult a doctor to find an exercise program that is best for you.
We thank to allow us to post this article on our site.

Crash diets can help you lose weight quickly, but most people gain the weight back. Some are also unhealthy and dangerous. If you choose to go with a specific diet plan, choose one that is medically credible.

Silky smooth skin in Seconds ! A special by our Content Manager

The Japanese have long known the benefits of a good hearty body scrub. The typical Japanese bathing routine, which can take anywhere from half an hour to over an hour, consists of soak, scrub, soak, scrub and soak and scrub once more for good measure. If this sounds like a recipe for raw red skin, you've got the wrong idea. Granted, such a regimen would be drying if you did it every day, but on a weekly basis a thorough body exfoliation will leave your skin healthy and glowing.

What we tend to forget as we slather our bodies with milky cleansers and heavy lotions is that the skin is our most essential and effective elimination organ. When all these products build up and clog the pores, the skin can't do its job. So all the toxins and excess fluids get absorbed into the body, emerging as breakouts or collecting in our most porous cells: FAT cells. A vigorous scrub, however, serves two purposes:

  • The scrubbing itself removes dirt, dead skin cells and environmental build-up, clearing our pores so they can flush all those nasty toxins; and
  • The massage action improves circulation, breaking up fatty deposits that can cause cellulite, while also giving the body a rosy glow.

Still need convincing? Try picturing a Japanese woman with cellulite -- I know I can't. While this is also a benefit of the virtually dairy-free Japanese diet, the wondrous properties of the body scrub should not be underestimated. Popular scrubbing tools of the Japanese include combinations of rice brans, beans and sea kelps as well as various brushes.

The most common body scrub -- and a favorite of luxury spas all over the world -- is sea salt. Simply combine two cups of coarse sea salt with enough water or oil (preferably almond or olive) to form a paste, adding a few drops of essential oil if you choose. Smooth the mixture (do not rub,
the salt crystals will do the work) over the body, allow it to 'set' for a few minutes and rinse.

If your skin is broken out or prone to irritations, sugar can serve as a milder all-over exfoliant. Combine two cups of regular supermaket sugar with enough oil to make a paste, then follow the directions above. Important: Neither of these scrubs should be used on the face!

Since scrubbing does strip some of the skin's surface oils, use a body oil when you come out of the shower. Massage the oil into damp skin and blot the excess with a towel. Some favorites are sunflower oil (rich in vitamin A) blended with relaxing lemon balm and rose petals; or A- and E-rich sesame oil, infused with purifying astringent herbs like rosemary and thyme. Use a tablespoon of dried herbs for every half cup of oil.

Let the infusions sit at room temperature for about a week before you use them.

If you'd prefer not to make your own products, there are many pre-blended oils and packaged salt scrubs available at health-food stores, upscale natural cosmetic counters and your local drug store.

Whatever route you choose, the important thing is the end product: smooth and polished skin from head to toe.

Personal Make-Up Reaserch by Mehwish Piracha (Lahore)

The radiant glow on your face is going to come naturally-you'll only want to enhance it with your make-up. These application tips will help you look your best for your wedding:

Moisturizer and make-up base should be applied with a cotton swab, which helps control the amount of make-up used. This is less wasteful and much neater.

Use a sponge to blend your base make-up to assure an even application. This will also prevent the transmission of bacteria from your hands and any redness caused by rubbing
too hard with your fingers.

Powder over your foundation to prevent that shiny, greasy look. This will also set a good base for applying the rest of your make-up.

Roll a cotton swab in loose powder and apply under lower lashes to make your eyeliner last longer and to prevent smudging. Dramatize your eyes and make the white of your eye brighter by lining the outer third of the lower inside lid with a deep blue eyepencil.

Accent your eyebrows lightly with an eyebrow pencil, or use an old, almost dry mascara wand. Hairspray will also help to thicken the eyebrows and keep them in place.

The eyebrows are extremely important as they frame the face. When using colors, dab your brushes in the color much as an artist dabs in paint. Never rub or dig your brush in color.

Make sure you are using the correct brush for placement of color. Each brush is designed to fit a certain area of your face. Good sable brushes will filter out color so it will go on lightly and evenly-you don't want a dark, linear effect. With weekly washings in shampoo followed by a thorough rinsing, sable brushes will last for years.

Most importantly, make sure you practice your make-up application with the colors you've chosen to wear ahead of time, or schedule a makeover appointment at least one week
before your wedding. Knowing you'll look perfect will make you relaxed and confident on your wedding day!
PS Don't for get your nails.

Guide To Eye MakeUp Reaserch by Sadia Hanif

The simplest look for your eyes, and universally flattering: a transparent wash of brown. To do: First, use the shadow as eyeliner, smudging it along the lash line with a sponge applicator. (Or use a soft pencil in a similar shade.) Then use a brush to sweep a sheer layer of shadow over the lid up to the crease; blend softly. You won't need highlighter on the brow bone — the natural contours of the eye create their own highlights. Finish with a light coat of mascara.

Use pink, blue, or lavender eye shadow as an accent only, layered over a neutral base color of beige or pale mushroom. Brush the neutral over the whole lid, then apply the accent color from lash line to crease.

To open up your eyes and enhance their natural shape, try using three shades of eye shadow this way: Apply the lighter shade all over the eye, with the medium shade in the crease for contouring and the darker shade alone as a soft eyeliner, or at the outer corner of your eyes. For a mistake-proof application, put one coat of mascara on before your shadow and one coat after. That'll give you a better sense of the eye's shape, and the second coat will cover any powder that's landed on lashes.

You can try a pearlescent eye shadow for an evening look, but limit shimmer to lids only. If it's worn all over the eye, the sparkle can highlight fine lines. Look for soft, shimmer browns, or brighten matte eye shades you already have by applying a touch of silver or white shimmer to the center of the lid.

To add drama and depth to your eyes, use dark brown or brown/charcoal eye pencil — gently smudged — and apply it first, before shadow, to keep the look soft. Or you can use a black eye shadow as a liner — a softer, smokier look than liquid liner. For all-out glamour, use it to add a thin line right as the lash line, and the same under lower lashes (but doing just the outer third of the eye).

Using a little foundation on your lids helps makeup colors stay truer and last longer.

When you shop for eye shadow, don't match the color of your eyes, or go brighter than your own eye color.

Here's how you can draw a straight line with liquid eyeliner: Prop the elbow of the hand you're drawing with on a table for extra stability. Gently stretching your skin with the other hand also keeps you on the straight and narrow.

Apply Mascara Like a Pro

First, curl lashes with one firm squeeze of a lash curler.
Dip the mascara wand into the tube just once for both upper and lower lashes. More, and you'll load too much mascara onto the wand. Note: If your lashes always look gloppy, use a tissue to wipe excess mascara from the brush before applying.
Working from the outer corner inward, place the brush at the lash base and sweep upward to the tips. To minimize clumping, use as few strokes as possible. (It's unnecessary to do the topside of lashes.)
For lower lashes, hold the wand vertically and sweep lashes from side to side with the tip of the brush. Or for a face-brightening look, skip lower lashes altogether.

You can create an eye-widening effect by applying a second coat of mascara to upper lashes' outer corners.

If you're over 30, it's generally best to avoid black mascara (unless your coloring is very dark). Brown or brown-black shades look softer and more flattering on most everyone.

Here's the best way to define and shape brows: Place a pencil alongside your nose, up past your eye — that's where the brow should start. Then move the pencil across the eye, to its outer corner — that's where the brow should end. (This is just a guideline: don't obsess over a little more or a little less.) Tweeze only one hair at a time, and don't be afraid to pluck strays above the brow line.

Here's how you can fill in tiny gaps in eyebrows: Choose an eyebrow pencil or powder in a shade slightly lighter than your natural brow color. When in doubt, use taupe — it suits nearly everyone. Starting in the center of the brow — the part that should appear darkest — apply the product to any gaps. Then use a brush (most brow products come with them) to smudge the color outward in both directions. The closer you get to either end, the lighter the color should appear. Optional finishing touch: a clear brow fixer — the brow equivalent of hair spray.

You can get more impact for evening by using an eyebrow pencil in a shade that matches your own brows (going too dark can age you). Using hair-fine strokes, fill any gaps, then extend brows at the outer ends — no more that an eighth of an inch — to frame the face. Blend with a brow brush.

Scaly red patches on your eyebrows may be seborrheic dermatitis (like dandruff, but on your face). To treat it, wash with a mild soap-free cleanser. Don't moisturize; instead, use an AHA gel or liquid and an over-the-counter one percent cortisone cream once a day. If the flakes don't disappear after two weeks, see a dermatologist.

Tension Tamer Tip Try this minimassage to relieve tension around the eyes — and help you feel calmer all over:
Cup your face in your palms. Breathe deeply a few times, then rub your cheeks up and down until they feel warm.
Place palms over your closed eyes and take a few calming breaths.
With eyes closed, press your fingertips on the browbone, moving outward from the eyes' inner corners. Do the same on the bones just underneath the eyes. Repeat three times.
Pinch the bridge of your nose between your thumb and index finger. Hold for ten seconds, then pull fingers away; repeat three times.
Massage your temples in a circular motion, gradually increasing the pressure, then hold your fingers against your temples and take a few more relaxing breaths.

A Bit About foundation and Lipsticks For the smoothest, sheerest look, use translucent loose powder. Keep formulas consistent: If you use oil-controlling foundation, for instance, use an oil-free powder. Save pressed powder for touch-ups or wear it solo, since it can look heavy when applied directly over foundation.

Tip: Limit touch-ups to twice a day; too much powder buildup can leave you looking masky. Instead, carry linen blotting papers to lift away excess oil.

Keep your blush in the same color family as your lipstick — warm (peaches, corals, terra-cottas) or cool (plums, pinks, wines). Don't apply stripes of color up to your temples. Use blush sparingly and apply it only on the apples of your cheeks, blending slightly outward and upward.

Tip: To avoid streaky-looking blush when the weather's warm, use a cream-to-powder formula or a sheer gel.

Happiness Bottled (even without a Bingo Win!)

Did you know that schools are now offering courses in happiness to ensure shiny, happy, well-rounded young adults – it's actually the most popular course at Harvard! (If only they knew about the great Littlewoods Bingo prizes and games – guaranteed to make you a happy chappy!) But you don't need a higher education qualification to attend this class.

Here's Littlewoods Bingo's six-step programme to achieve an elated state of mind. Because, at the end of the day, it's all about the bingo fun and being happy! You may think that the Littlewoods bingo jackpot is the key to eternal happiness – and yes a bingo cash prize wouldn't be the worst thing in the world - but it's proven that Quantity not Quality unlocks an everlasting smile.

Bingo Tip: Raid the sale racks for some bargains, download you favourite tunes to your ipod (the cheesier the better!), watch one of your favourite films or have a quick game of bingo. Despite the bitter weather, one sure-fire way to cheer up is to Go Au Natural.

Now we're not encouraging you to don the streets in your birthday suit. No, we're telling you to get back to nature. Studies have shown that hospital patients with a natural view, be it of a stretch of lawn, a tree or maybe a pond, have a faster recovery rate than those who just stare at the walls or a TV screen.

Bingo Tip: Ignore the temptation to stay inside. Go for a walk in your lunch hour to clear your head, or sit by a window when you're playing online bingo. Wrap up warm at the weekend and take a stroll around a nearby park or beach. Now it's that time of year where we take a look at everything we don't like about ourselves and resolve to change it all!

The list is endless and usually unrealistic. And if we slip up on any of these, we feel guilty and unhappy. We all have our flaws and it is only natural to use the dawn of a new year as a marking point to change them.

But forget all that now and focus on your strengths. Maybe you're the one people talk to in our online bingo chat rooms when they need to comforting shoulder. Perhaps you've got the knack of tackling a problem head on. Or maybe you've been a really lucky bingo player.

Bingo Tip
: Pin down everything that's positive about you and refer to them when you're feeling a bit blue. And if you get stick thinking, ask your bingo chat room friends – bet you a bingo jackpot they'll think of loads!

And this leads us nicely on to step four - Set Challenging yet Appropriate Targets. Believe it or not, we all crave a challenge and we all feel happy when we meet a target. The trick is to find the middle ground between setting testing but achievable goals.

Raise the bar too high and you'll run the risk of falling short; place it too low and the win will feel less creditable.

Bingo Tip: Stick to a predetermined food budget when you do the Friday big shop or do an extra 10 minutes on the treadmill if you're hitting the gym. Doesn't sound much but it'll give you a happy, proud feeling.

The Feng Shui phenomenon may be so last decade but the principle behind it should be alive and kicking so start Sprucing up your Pad! If you think about it, our environments are vital to our wellbeing – otherwise why would we spend so much on exotic holidays?

So your home needs to be a well-equipped haven to help ease your work place trouble, especially during the winter months and drab walls are hardly going to cut it.

Bingo Tip: Have a DIY weekend, stick on some of your favourite songs, arm yourself with a paintbrush and roller and off you go! Light, airy colours are best in winter. If you're not feeling quite this energetic, pop in to good ol' Ikea and brighten up your home with some new knick-knacks and pictures.

And finally, probably the most sensible one of the lot – Remember What Last Made You Happy. If you're feeling a bit fed up, bit down in the dumps remember what it was that last made you smile. A joke, the feeling you got when your bingo numbers are called or a cuddle from a loved one. Hold on to that memory and it'll put a smile back on your face.

Health & Beauty - All in Your Hands

Health & Beauty - All in Your Hands

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Explanation

What is beauty? Is it the emaciated model strutting down the catwalk? The muscle-bound man flexing for the passing females, perhaps? Or the young woman who's overly made-up face testifies to the falsehood that beauty can be obtained from a jar?

The adage "Beauty is more than just skin deep" is, in fact, more than just an old saying; it's truth.

Beauty cannot be obtained simply by slapping on colors and textures to the skin. It is a reflection of health. And not just the health of the body, but of the mind and spirit, as well. In short, beauty is a reflection of total inner health.

Keeping up a positive attitude, helping others, and spreading joy has its own rewards. One of those is the beauty reflected in the countenance of such persons. But these qualities don't always come naturally, and must be worked at. Looking and feeling beautiful go hand in hand. Sometimes, in order to feel more beautiful, one needs to look more beautiful. Yet some people are unable to look more beautiful until they feel more beautiful. This can be a real "catch 22" for some.

There is, however, a way to encourage inner beauty to the surface. True beauty comes from inner nourishment. A positive attitude and helping others nourishes the spirit. Education and higher learning nourishes the mind. And natural foods, herbs, and supplements nourish the body. In fact, there are a wide variety of nutrients that can bring out that inner beauty we all have, and make it shine like a beacon for all to enjoy.

B's Are For Beauty

Many of the B vitamins are required by the nails, skin, and hair for optimum strength, elasticity, and sheen. For instance riboflavin, or B2, is involved with an enzyme called glutathione reductase, which helps maintain glutathione, a key protector against free-radical damage. In addition, B2 itself has antioxidant properties. Free radicals are one of the most damaging compounds known to the body, including the skin. Free radicals can eat away the elasticity of the skin and hair, encouraging wrinkles and dull, lackluster hair. Stimulates health and growth of hair, nails, skin cells. Helps eyes by bringing oxygen to body tissues. Can help eliminate
dandruff. May aid in preventing hair loss.
Thiamine, or B1, is also needed for the maintenance of healthy skin. Vitamin B1- a protein builder that helps give hair shine, volume and good texture. Enhances circulation to bring nutrients to the scalp and nails. Vitamin B3 - Niacin
Supports healthy hair, nail and skin by aiding in digestion and improving circulation.

Pyridoxine, or B6, is one of the most essential vitamins in the body. It is a coenzyme which participates in over sixty enzymatic reactions involved in the metabolism of amino acids (the building blocks of protein) and of essential fatty acids. Therefore, this vitamin is required for the proper growth and maintenance of nearly all bodily functions. A deficiency of B6 results in an extraordinary array of symptoms, the most frequently diagnosed and well-recognized occurring in the skin and nervous system. The changes in the skin and mucous membranes are similar to those caused by other members of the water-soluble B-complex family. These include seborrheic dermatitis (most often around the nose, eyes, eyebrows and mouth), acne, cheilosis, and stomatitis (tiny sores and cracks in and around the mouth), and glossitis (inflamed tongue). Pyridoxine supports the growth of red blood cells that are important for healthy hair, scalp,
and nail maintenance. Helps prevent dandruff. May aid in preventing hair loss.

Folic acid is another B vitamin member that is essential to healthy skin, hair, and nails. As it is needed for the production of RNA and DNA, folic acid is vital to healthy cell division and replication. This attribute makes it essential for tissues that grow or regenerate rapidly, such as skin, hair, and nails, to name a few. May aid in preventing hair loss. With Pantothenic
acid, may delay graying of hair.

Biotin is another B vitamin that is heavily involved with the manufacture and utilization of amino acids and fats. Dubbed "the hair vitamin," laboratory studies have shown that a deficiency in biotin causes hair loss in rats, and that supplementation of this vitamin can promote hair growth. Oddly enough, biotin has also been used to successfully manage excessive and stubborn cowlicks in children.

Hair is not the only beneficiary to biotin supplementation; another sign of biotin deficiency is dry, scaly skin and brittle nails. In fact, recent studies have examined biotin's role as a preventive and therapeutic agent for brittle nails. Early research demonstrated that adding biotin to the diets of horses and pigs resulted in an increase in the strength and hardness of their hooves. However, a recent human study conducted by researcher L.G. Hochman and published in Cutis showed that biotin supplementation can produce a 25 percent increase in the thickness of the nail plate in human patients diagnosed with brittle nails of unknown cause, and up to 91 percent of patients given biotin (at a dose of 2,500 micrograms per day) experience unequivocal improvement.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition, otherwise known as cradle cap, that typically occurs in infancy. It is characterized by scaly bumps which merge to form large plaques or patches. According to a study conducted by A. Nisenson and published in the Journal of Pediatrics, this common skin disorder can be corrected through biotin supplementation, either by giving biotin to a mother if she is breast-feeding her baby, or directly to the infant if she is not.

Pantothenic acid is yet another water-soluble B vitamin involved with the metabolism of fats and proteins, among other nutrients. Called the "vitamin of youth and beauty," its reputation as a nutrient for hair, nails, and skin is legendary. While pantothenic deficiencies are extremely rare, clinically-induced deficiencies brought on fatigue, burning feet, and headache. Laboratory-induced pantothenic deficiencies resulted in the graying and loss of hair in rats. An interesting trial conducted years ago on laboratory mice showed that those in the pantothenic-supplemented group lived 18 to 20 percent longer than unsupplemented control mice. This well-planned study sparked renewed interest in the vitamin, and speculations on its youth-preserving abilities were rampant. However, more studies are needed to confirm these preliminary findings - particularly human trials. Pantothenic Acid helps producefull, healthy hair and stronger nails by stimulating vitamin utilization and releasing energy from food. With Folic acid, it can help to restore your hair's natural color and may aid in preventing hair loss.

Preservational Powers Of EFA's

Until recently, fat phobias and the resultant barrage of lowfat and nonfat food products made the idea of purposefully consuming fats seem ludicrous, and the decline in American health was a mean reflection of this vain pursuit. But in this growing age of information, the importance of essential fatty acids has finally been realized, and Americans are now enjoying the health benefits of this new-found knowledge.

Essential fatty acids (EFA's) offer a broad range of protection to the body, including the skin, hair, and. nails. Over the past decade, the importance of essential fatty acids have been pushed to the forefront of health supplement industry. The main focus of their importance has been their immune-boosting, anti-cancer, and heart-protective properties. But often overlooked is their effect on the external tissues, such as skin and hair.

Free-flowing, EFA-containing oils - such as flaxseed oil, borage oil, evening primrose oil, and fish oil - are essential for healthy skin. Omega 3's make skin soft and velvety. The skin can suffer from a wide variety of very common disorders which affect the way we are perceived. Acne, skin rashes, allergic bumps, eczema, dry, flaky skin, and greasy skin are often just reflections of what kind of diet we are maintaining. Adding essential fatty acids to the diet can make a world of difference in our appearance. This reflection influences not only how others perceive us, but often how we perceive ourselves!

Beautiful skin requires essential fatty acids. When properly nourished with EFA's, the skin becomes smoother, feels much softer, exhibits fewer of the above-mentioned conditions, and actually becomes less susceptible to infection. It also ages considerably more slowly and remains wrinkle-free longer. In fact, in the presence of essential fatty acids the skin becomes downright radiant. Hair, too, benefits from these lipids, taking on a healthy sheen becoming more silken to the touch.

Other Nutrients, Other Factors

Vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta carotene are the "three musketeers" that continuously come to the aid of beauty by battling and quenching free radicals before they can harm precious and vulnerable skin. Fat-soluble beta carotene, for example, migrates to the skin, where it offers not only protection from free radicals from within, but from without, as well. It enables the skin to increase its exposure time to the sun before burning. But for some people with very sensitive skin can case sun burn. Likewise, vitamin E helps prevent free radicals generated by UV rays in the skin from doing their damage. Vitamin C, in turn, recharges vitamins E and carotene, and also prevents skin damage due to UV-generated free radicals. Vitamin C supports hair and
nail growth by improving circulation. Useful as treating dandruff. May aid in preventing hair loss.

Zinc and Selenium are two minerals that are also essential to beautiful skin, hair, and nails. Selenium has been called one of the most critical anti-aging nutrients on the planet. It is a superior antioxidant and free radical neutralizer. Zinc, an antioxidant in its own right, is also an integral part of enzyme function and tissue repair. Chromium is a mineral that is necessary for impaired glucose tolerance, elevated blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, promotion of weight loss, acne, stimulates enzymes in metabolism of energy, healthy blood circulatory system, synthesis of fatty acids, cholesterol and protein. Helps to reduce skin inflammation and improve glucose tolerance. Some studies indicate that glucose tolerance can be impaired in some people suffering from acne. Also helps to reduce infections of the skin

In addition to adding specific supplements to the diet, there are other factors one should consider when seeking radiant skin. A diet of whole foods is, of course, a must. One cannot attain radiant health on processed foods, no matter how many supplements one adds to the diet. Next, don't be afraid to work at looking good - literally. Sweating is one of the best known paths to beautiful skin. Remember, the epidermis is the largest organ of the body. Sweating rids the body of toxins that otherwise cannot be eliminated. A good exercise program may just be what your skin is craving to break free of its lackluster bonds. Lastly, drink lots of water. Research has shown that a dry mouth is not a reliable indicator that dehydration is occurring. Not only does drinking a minimum of six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day act as preventive and therapeutic agent in numerous disorders, but the skin is the most immediately obvious benefactor of this consumption. You will be absolutely amazed at the difference in your skin if you drink this amount of water every single day. Not only will fine lines fade, but skin will feel velvety smooth.
